Summer Soirée 2025

This January, .UNLID. Dance Theatre invites intermediate and advanced pre-professional and professional dancers to engage in an intensive three-day workshop designed to deepen technical mastery, foster creative exploration, and enhance personal expression. The January Summer Soirée offers a unique opportunity to refine your technique, expand your creative vocabulary, and connect with a community of like-minded artists.

Day 1 & 2: Technical Precision and Creative Innovation

Over the first two days, we will immerse ourselves in .UNLID.’s Signature Technical and Creative Practice, which blends the precision of Limon Modern Dance Technique with the expansive possibilities of Laban Movement Analysis. This approach challenges dancers to refine their physicality while also expanding their artistic range.

  • Limon Modern Dance Technique: Rooted in principles of gravity, momentum, and support, Limon’s technique offers dancers the tools to understand the body’s relationship to space and force. With a focus on fall and recovery, breath, and dynamic range, dancers will explore how to move with efficiency and fluidity while grounding themselves in the fundamentals of support and control.

  • Laban Fundamentals: In this segment, we will explore the core elements of Laban Movement Analysis—space, time, weight, and flow. By delving into these principles, dancers will enhance their ability to shift between textures, dynamics, and spatial awareness, enriching their improvisational and choreographic processes.

Day 3: Freedom and Expression through House Dance

The final day of the workshop will focus on House Dance, a style deeply rooted in rhythm, flow, and personal expression. This is an opportunity for dancers to explore a different mode of creative freedom, moving beyond technical constraints to engage with music and body in a more spontaneous, intuitive way.

  • Rhythm & Flow: House Dance is grounded in musicality. Dancers will work to connect movement with rhythm, learning how to flow effortlessly between musical phrases while developing an intuitive sense of timing and groove.

  • Personal Expression & Articulation: House Dance is deeply personal, allowing dancers to develop their own unique movement language. This session will focus on body articulations, transitions, and footwork while also exploring the cultural and historical roots of House Dance as a form of urban expression.

The Grand Finale: F5 Performance

To conclude the January Summer Soirée, we invite you to experience an exclusive performance of F5 on January 31st at 6pm at Arnold Street Studio. Performed by UNLID Dance Theatre artists, this work offers a unique insight into the company’s vision and its ongoing exploration of contemporary dance as a storytelling medium.

F5 is a mapping of self and lineage—an exploration of identity, survival, and the deconstruction of the individual within the pressures of society. It asks: Who are we once deconstructed, and how do we find wholeness in the fragmented pieces of our being? This performance reflects the continual evolution of the dancer’s role as a storyteller, navigating the complex intersections of personal and collective history.
